Why Knowing Your Neighbors Matters

A connected community is a safer community; a more welcoming community; a community that’s better equipped to solve tough challenges.

Studies have shown the potential for community violence increases when citizens feel powerless or disconnected.

But crime rates are lower in communities with a strong civic life, as civically healthy communities are better equipped to provide social, economic and educational support to their citizens.

But nationally, out of 51 metro areas, greater Seattle ranks 37th in giving or receiving favors with neighbors and 48th in talking with neighbors frequently.

That’s why we are excited to once again partner with the Seattle Police Department to promote neighborliness and its impact on building healthy and safe communities.

Night Out Against Crime is a national event designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, celebrate community and spend time with neighbors.

The Seattle Police Department coordinates local Night Out activities that touch thousands of Seattleites in the neighborhoods they call home. Last year there were over 1,400 registered block parties and gatherings across the city.
