Municipal League of King County -- Candidate Evaluation Committee

Municipal League of King County's Candidate Evaluation Committee (CEC) is the region's only independent non-partisan, non-agenda-driven evaluation of candidates.  This year we plan to fill five committees with representation in all corners of King County.  Below are some important dates and facts about the program:

Social Venture Partners Seattle -- Brainerd Fellowship Announcement

SVP is a network of accomplished individuals who combine financial contributions and professional skills with a passion for philanthropy. Leveraging our collective expertise and resources, we partner with and strengthen promising nonprofits for maximum community impact.
To ensure a strong, healthy network of people, SVP continually strives to increase the diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and cultures represented in the organization.  In this spirit, SVP invites interested individuals in King County to apply for a two-year "Brainerd Fellowship."  We wish to attract people that couldn't otherwise make the required financial commitment and that will add value to and find personal reward from SVP’s work. Past fellows have added a great deal to the work of SVP, particularly serving on grant committees where they brought perspective and insight that would otherwise have been lacking.
This two-year Fellowship is intended to widen and strengthen the circle of partners involved in SVP. This fellowship is named in honor of SVP’s co-founder, Paul Brainerd, and reflects his spirit and ethos.  The fellowships are funded by current Partners, and cover the annual $5,700 partner contribution.
The deadline for application is June 15, 2008.  If you are a finalist, you will likely be asked for references as well. An internal committee will review all applications, interview finalists, and notify the two Fellows of their acceptance by July 15, 2008. Fellows will be asked to submit a final (two page) report on their experience and recommendations at the end of their two-year fellowship.  For more information, visit www.svpseattle.org.

On Thursday, May 22, join United Way of King County and other leading area organizations for a conversation with Rob Grunewald, a Federal Reserve economist and one of the country’s top experts on early childhood development programs and their rich returns to business and economic vitality.

Mr. Grunewald is the author of several studies demonstrating the improved life and work outcomes for young children with nurturing home and learning settings. His research details how children who make a strong start in life later flourish in school, succeed in the workplace, and make lower demands on costly social services.

In conversation with businessman John Stanton, Managing Director of Trilogy Partnership (United Way of King County Campaign Chair and Chair of Business Partnership for Early Learning), Mr. Grunewald will discuss the elements that, together, add up to a promising early childhood, especially for kids beginning life with social and economic obstacles. A special topic will be Mr. Grunewald’s recent exploration of parent-home visiting programs, which help struggling families give their children the kind of home environment shown to promote later success in pre-school and beyond.

If you’re someone interested in a Washington State of social opportunity and economic prosperity, this session is a must.

On June 17th, Washington Policy Center (WPC) will hold its Annual Center for Transportation Event. Last year’s event sold out, so be sure not to miss this year’s breakfast featuring a keynote address by Ronald D. Utt, Ph.D, a well known national transportation and economics expert and Senior Research Fellow with The Heritage Foundation. He will focus on congestion relief and how Washington can improve. Dr. Utt will discuss model legislation considered in other states across the country that prioritizes traffic relief when spending transportation taxes. Through a performance based program, our state might benefit from a similar strategy.
Dr. Utt is the author of several transportation studies including, “More Transportation Spending: False Promises of Prosperity and Job Creation,” and “Restoring Regional Equity to the Federal Highway Trust Fund.” Dr. Utt served as Director of the Housing Finance Division at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, was Senior Economist at the Office of Management and Budget, and Associate Chief Economist of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Michael Ennis, Center for Transportation Director, will give a brief update on recent studies published by WPC, including 5 Principles of Responsible Transportation Policy, results from WPC’s statewide Traffic Congestion Poll and The Facts on Light Rail: A Comparative Analysis of Light Rail in Six West Coast Cities.
